1. WILLIAM LEWIS2 CRANFORD (JOHN1) was born 1817 in NC, and died Bet. 1860 - 1870. He married PALLY SANDERS Jan 22, 1834 in Montgomery Co, NC, daughter of NIMROD SAUNDERS and MARY RICKETS. She was born Feb 28, 1814 in NC, and died Aft. 1880 in Marshall Co., AL.

Notes for WILLIAM LEWIS CRANFORD:

Most references I have found for this person lists him a Lewis Cranford leaving off the William. My aunt Belle Frasier Dean (Lewis' second great granddaughter) said his name was William Lewis.

The case that John and Winney Cranford are the parents of Lewis is made from the fact that in 1850 John Cranford age 80 and wife, Winney age 68 are living near Lewis in Cherokee Co, AL. Also in 1860 in Marshall Co, AL Winney Cranford age 78 is living with Lewis.

In 1830 Lincoln Co, TN. There is a John Cranford, William L. Cranford, and James Cranford all about the same age 50/60. Our Lewis would be age 13. John has a wife the right age to be Winney 30/40, and he has a son 10/15. His family - Males (1) 50/60, (1) 15/20, (1) 10/15, (1) 5/10, (2) 0/5. Females - (1) 30/40, (1) 20/30, (1) 15/20, (1) 10/15, (2) 5/10, (2) 0/5.

1840 Cherokee Co, AL. Louis Cranford 20/30, Pally 20/30. They have one female 10/15. They had children born in TN in 1834 and 1836. In addition Celia was born in Alabama in 1840. It seems to me that they probably moved to Alabama in 1840 and left their two children with relatives in Tennessee. And since Pally was pregnant they brought a sister of Louis or Pally to help get settled in the new home.

1860 Marshall Co, AL. Louis Cranford 43, Pally 46, Children: Sarah M. 17, Celia Ann 13, John C. 10, Elizabeth 8, Pally P. 5. Also Winney Cranford 78 - Louis' mother. The child listed as Celia Ann should be Winney - Celia Ann married Addison Bishop in 1855 and is listed with him in 1860. Louis, Pally, and mother - Winney b. NC.

In 1870 Pally is listed in Marshall Co, AL without Louis. He probably died between 1860-1870.

Lewis' first two children, Mary and Martha were born in TN. All others born in AL. Lewis and his mother, Winney, were born in NC. His father, John was born in MD.

Have not been able to find Winney after the 1860 census record. In 1860 she would be age 13 but the daughter aged 13 listed on the 1860 census record is Celia Ann. Actually Celia Ann should be 20 and she is married and is living with her husband in 1860. By 1870 Winney would be 23 and probably married but I can not find a marriage for her.

Henry had a few problems with the church.
He had a committee visit him twice: once to discuss "his being out about playing the fiddle and dancing", and once to discuss "his walking disorderly". Both times he admitted he did wrong and begged forgiveness.

Mary Magdelene Slaton (Mollie) was born in 1869, Marshall Co, AL where she is listed on the census records for 1870, 1900, 1910, and 1930. In 1880 she is in De Kalb Co, AL with her parents. Mollie was married in 1885 to Thomas Nathaniel Frasier. Her marriage license lists him as Charles N. Frasier. I believe this is a mistake. She named her first son Thomas Nathaniel.

She married (second) Asa Tillman Stone in 1894. On the 1930 census she is living with her youngest son, W. Henry Stone. She died in 1958.

Notes for THOMAS NATHANIEL FRASIER:

Thomas Nathaniel Frasier was born in 1859 in Marshall Co, AL. He is listed as Thomas N., age 4 mos on the 1860 census. He is listed as Nathaniel, age 11 on the 1870 census and Nathaniel age 20 on the 1880 census.

The marriage license for Thomas Nathaniel Frasier and Mary Magdelene Slaton lists him as Charles N. Frasier. Mollie Slaton Frasier Stone called him Nate. She said his name was Thomas Nathaniel and she named his son Thomas Nathaniel. I believe that the original license was hard to read and when it was re-written for distribution it was mis-read.

Mollie Stone also said he was of Scottish descent. She met him when he returned home after visiting family in Texas. She was present at a party where he played the fiddle and she mentioned his 'dashing figure and flashing eyes'. They ran away to get married but her father and brothers caught them and brought them back. Her father whipped her with his belt for running away. Then he agreed that they could marry even though she was only 16 years old.

Thomas Nathaniel died of typhoid in 1888. He is buried at Shoal Creek Cemetery in Marshall County, Alabama.
