1. THOMAS2 SMEDLEY (JOHN1) was born Sep 10, 1767 in Edgefield Co, SC, and died 1851 in Chambers Co, AL. He married NAOMI MELTON Jan 14, 1790 in Edgefield Co, SC, daughter of NATHAN MELTON and SUSANNAH ??. She was born Dec 25, 1768 in Haw Fields, Alamance, NC, and died Bef. 1850 in Green Co, GA.

Notes for THOMAS SMEDLEY:

1850 Troup Co, GA. Thomas Smedley, Sr. 82, Thomas M. 55, Naomi 45, Mary A. 16, Olivia 8. I don't know who Mary A. and Olivia are. 1850 Troup Co, GA - Slave Schedule shows Thomas owns 23 slaves.

Thomas moved his family to Troup County, GA by 1837. Most of his children moved on to Chambers Co and Randolph Co, Al. In Oct 1838 Thomas hired a man to build a house and a thread mill on the "Chattahoochee River near Grier's Ferry?. Later on, the man took Thomas to court claiming that Thomas had not paid him. The court ruled in favor of Thomas Smedley. One family record states that this mill was the first cotton thread mill in the South.
