John Jeremiah Collier And Sarah Ann
Wood |
1. JOHN
JEREMIAH2
COLLIER
(WILLIAM1)
was born 1757 in Scotland, and died Bef. 1831 in AL. He married SARA
ANN
WOOD
Jan 15, 1781 in Warren Co, NC, daughter of WILLIAM
WOOD
and MARTHA
KENDRICK.
She was born Jan 25, 1765 in Rowan Co, NC.
Notes for JOHN
JEREMIAH
COLLIER:
On th 1880 census for Marshall Co, AL John's son Thomas said that John was
born in Scotland. Joshua, his only other son living in 1880 said he was born in
NC.
John was appointed Lieutenant of the Militia in Randolph Co, NC on Sep 16,
1801. He died or was killed on a trip to AL before 1831. When his father-in-law
William Wood died and his estate was being settled, a search for John Jeremiah
Collier was made in 1831. He could not be found and that fact was entered into
the records. The record states that he died or was killed while leading his
troops on a trip to Alabama. But in 1831 John would have been over 70 years old
and some of his sons had already moved to GA and I suspect that John may also
have moved to GA. Census records for GA until 1820 were lost.
I have only 6 children for John and Sarah - five sons and one daughter. If
the following census record is right for John then I am missing at least five
daughters. The two males under 16 in 1790 would be the twins, Meredith and
Merrill. I have not found John on census records after 1790.
1790 Randolph Co, NC. John Collier - 1 male over 16, 2 males under 16 and 7
females.
All his sons except William went from NC to Jackson Co, GA and some went on
to AL. William was killed in 1820. John's son Thomas lived for a time in Moore
Co, NC because his son, Jesse Wilburn was born there in 1828. The twins, Merrill
and Meredith remained in Georgia, settling in DeKalb Co. and then in Fulton Co.
in the Atlanta area. Jesse, Joshua, and Thomas went on to eastern Alabama.
Joshua and Thomas then moved on to northwestern Alabama then back to Marshall
Co, AL.
Marriage bond gives his name as John Caller.

National Genealogical Society, Washington DC, 1965. "Meril Collier Meril
(Merrell) and his twin brother Meredith Collier were born in 1782 in Randolph

formation of Gwinnett, and in 1823 they moved to DeKalb County. Merrill and his

and died in 1858; and daughters Charlotte who married Eli J. Hulsey, Margaret
who married Dr. F. M. Brantley, Nancy who married David A. Cook, Laura who

Merrill's daughter Laura who married Col. T. J. Flake - and she is not listed in
his will.**
From: Tennessee The Volunteer State, Vol 4 Page 237 "Two brothers, Merrill
and Meredith Collier, removed to Fulton county, Georgia, about eighty or ninety
years ago and there purchased a large amount of land, upon which a great part of
the city of Atlanta now stands. Merrill Collier was the father of **Martha
Collier**, who became the wife of William Thomas Lofton and in honor of her
father she named her son James Merrill Lofton. He was graduated from the old
Penfield University at Macon, Georgia, now known as Mercer University, and
thence went to Philadelphia, where he studied medicine in the Jefferson Medical
College, and was graduated with high honors as a member of the class of 1861.
Immediately afterward he returned home and enlisted in the Confederate army as a
private but was later drafted into the medical department and thus served
throughout the war. He was twice slightly injured while discharging his duties
in the Medical Corps. Following the close of hostilities he continued in the
practice of his profession and also conducted a large cotton plantation in
Campbell county, Georgia to the time of his death, which occurred in 1876. It
was soon after his graduation from medical college that he wedded Alice J.
Ledbetter, a daughter of John J. and Maria (Goodwyn) Ledbetter."
**Note** Martha Collier daughter of Merrill became the wife of Benjamin
Lockey. Jane B. Collier daughter of Merrill is the one that became the wife of
William Thomas Lofton.

Twice Martha said she was b. in SC. I could not find her father Merrill
in 1810 but in Orangeburg Dist. SC in 1810 there's an M. Coler. He has
Males: (1) 0/10, (1) 10/16, (1) 26/45. Females: (1) 0/10, (1) 25/45. Could
not find this person in SC in 1820. In 1810 Merrill would be 28. If this is
him it would mean that he had a wife even before Patsy. And that wife would
be the mother of Martha Washington and two sons which I have not found. I've
not found a reference to the Colliers moving to SC before going to GA.

Notes for JESSE

Jesse moved from NC to GA with the rest of his family. I find him first in
1840 in DeKalb Co, GA. He is married with two daughters. By 1950 he had married
Lockey Wheeler and had one son. Lockey is younger than his wife found in 1940. I
can not find a trace of his previous family. In 1850 and 1860 he is in Randolph
Co, AL. In 1870 he is in Cleburne Co, AL. In 1880 in Cleburne Co Lockey is
living with a daughter, Luella and the rest of the census records are for
Luella's family. Luella may be Sarah Luella or she may have just missed the 1870
census.
1840 De Kalb Co, GA. Jesse Collier, Male: (1) 40/50, Females: (1) 0/5, (1)
15/20, (1) 40/50.

17, Jeptha 15, Emily 14, Sarah 12, Noah 10, Merrill 6. Bob and Noah are possibly
the same.
The following concerns Leulla, a possible daughter since Lockey is living
with her.
1880 Cleburne Co, AL. George Albright 28, Luella 19, Jesse G. 9/12 b. Sep.
Lockey Collier (mother) 50, Merrill (brother) 16. It looks like Luella should be
Lockey's daughter but she didn't show up on a previous census record. Maybe it
is Sarah Luella?
1900 Clay Co, AL. George Albright 48, Luella 37. Sister-in-law, Nancy Smith
33 widow. Nancy's son Willie C. 13. George and Luella have been married 20 years
and had 5 children with 2 living. Nancy has had 1 child living. Next door is
Jeffrey? Albright age 21, Ada 16, John W. 3, Anna C. 1. Jeffrey? and Ada been
married 6 years and had 2 children.
1910 Marshall Co, AL. George Albright 56, Love Ella 42, Grandchildren: John
W. 12, Anna L. 11, Cora L. 5, Ruby 3. Married 31 years. Living next door is Josh

1920 Marshall Co, AL. Leander (Josh?) Albright 37, Belle 34, Children: Lessie
17, Arles (F) 15, Emory 13, Dewey 10, Estar Bell 7.
Except for Luella possibly being Sarah Luella I have not been able to find
any of Jesse's children on census records. They may have moved to Texas or
Oklahoma between census years.

Notes for BARZELLAI
COLLIER:
Birdzella (Bird or Barzellai) Collier was born in NC according to the
1850 census for Randolph Cty, AL. Bird and Martha J. were born in Gerogia.
The family moved from NC about 1835 and on to AL about 1838. I can't find
the family in 1840 - The closest is a family in Limestone Co, AL but I don't
think it is right.
Several researchers think that Barzellai is the daughter of Thomas B.
Collier and Mary Dent and the granddaughter of Col. James Collier of Madison
Co, AL. Census records do not show a Barzellai for this Thomas B. and
records for Thomas and Sarah (Morris) Collier do show Barzellai.
1900 Marion Co. AL, Burrell M. Camp 65, Barzellai 63, daughter, Nancy C.

Notes for MARTHA
JANE
COLLIER:
For awhile we thought that this Martha married William Richard Blackwell.
The Martha who married Blackwell was the daughter of Col. James Collier of
Madison Co, AL. Also we believed that Thomas B. Collier of Morgan County, AL
and the son of Col. James Collier who married Mary Dent was the father of
Barzellai Collier. We now know this is not true.
