4. FRANCES JAMIMA4 BARNEY (JAMES ROGERS3, JOHN2, BARNEY1) was born Apr 4, 1834 in Glenvile, Schenectady Co, NY, and died Jan 31, 1897 in Murphy, Cherokee Co, NC. She married JESSE SQUIRE BUDD Mar 4, 1861 in Crown Point, Lake Co., IN, son of JAMES BUDD and EUNICE SQUIRES. He was born Aug 31, 1823 in Dutchess Co, NY, and died Apr 5, 1897 in Murphy, Cherokee Co, NC.

Notes for FRANCES JAMIMA BARNEY:

**** NOTE - APRIL 2004 - We recently learned that although Frances lived with Jesse Budd on the 1880 census record, she was living with her father in 1870 and Jesse was living with Ellen. We can probably assume that the Barneys and Rogers are not is out family. We're leaving them in for the time being but need to resolve the relationship.

****Note - July 24, 2005 - Re-instated as mother to Jesse's last three children. Information received from Edward Hasselkus including 1865 state census record for Niagara Co, NY town of Hartland.

According to the 1880 Census Record Frances Barney was born in 1833 in New York. Her parents were both born in NY also.

She married Jesse S. Budd (His 3rd marriage). They are listed on the 1880 census record for Grant county, Wisconsin, Fennimore. George was married in 1890 in Desota County, Florida so it is believed that the family moved to Florida during the 80's. One story is that Jesse died there and Frances went with her son Squire James to Murphy, North Carolina (Cherokee Co) and she died there in 1897. We have not found a reference to them in NC.

Notes for JESSE SQUIRE BUDD:

The parents of Jesse Budd were in Schondack, Rensselaer Co, NY in 1820 and by 1830 had moved to Fishkill, Duchess Co, NY. Since Jesse was born in 1823 his birth place is uncertain. In 1840 and 1850 he was in Orleans Co, NY. In 1860 he was in Lake Co, Indiana. In 1870 and 1880 he was in Grant Co, WI. He had a son born in 1859 in MI. Family tradition says he moved to Kansas from WI and then back to WI. Sometime before 1890 he moved with his new wife and 3 youngest children to Florida. His son, George was married in 1890 in Florida. Tradition says he either died in Florida or moved to Murphy, Cherokee Co, NC with his wife, Frances and son, Squire James. I have found no trace of him after the 1880 census record in Grant Co, WI.

Jesse married Elmira Williams in 1848 in Orleans county, NY. She died in childbirth in 1854. Her son Jacob is living with Jesse's sister Abby Reed in 1855, listed as Judson. Elmira is the mother of Jesse's first three children.

Jesse married Amanda Albert in 1856. Amanda died in 1859, again in childbirth. Her son Aaron is living with his grandparents, Peter and Sarah Albert in 1865.

Census records say Aaron was born in Michigan and some say Amanda was buried in Indiana. It's certain that Jesse was a traveling man and is hard to trace.

The death certificate for George Budd, son of Jesse, says his mother was Frances Barney and that he was born in White Plains, Westchester Co, NY in 1857.

We have received new information from Edward Hasselkus, husband of great granddaughter to Mary Jane Barney (sister to Frances Barney). Mr. Hasselkus found the June 15, 1865 state census for Hartland, Niagara Co, NY which lists J. S. Budd 42, Frances J. 32 and children: Emily 15, Frank 14, Reed J. 11, Aaron 6, and Squire J. 2 8/12. Also Daniel H. Barney 26. Squire J. is listed as being born in Niagara Co, NY.

With this new information, we are re-instating Frances Barney as our ancestor. We have no explanation for the 1870 census record which lists Jesse and children living in Gant Co, WI without Frances. Instead Ellen is listed as house keeper. It's possible that Frances was off visiting relatives or possibly on a teaching assignment and Ellen was the house keeper. It's also possible that the census taker just got the names wrong. Indexers lists Isaac instead of Jesse and an examination of the actual record is inconclusive - could be Isaac or Jesse. But the children are definitely Jesse's.

Jesse is married to Frances (Barney) on the 1880 census record for Grant Co, WI.

Marriage from Edward Hasslekus: March 4, 1861 in Crown Point, Lake Co., IN

1850 Murray, Orleans Co, NY. Jesse Budd 26, Elmira 22, Emily 10/12. Jesse is a farmer living next door to parents.

1860 Eagle Creek, Lake Co, IN Jesse Budd 36, Amanda M. 30, Children: Emily E. 10, Frank 9, Reed J. 6, Aaron 1. Aaron b. MI. All others b. NY. Jesse is a farmer. Amanda's parents live next door.

1870 Liberty Ridge, Grant Co, WI. Jesse Budd 48, Ellen 45, Children: Frank 19, Reed 16, Squire 8, George 4. Jesse is a farmer with $ 2000 RE and $445 PP.

1880 Fennimore, Grant Co, WI. Jesse Budd 56, Frances 46, Children: Squire 17, George 16, Daniel 9. Jesse is a farmer.

Children of FRANCES BARNEY and JESSE BUDD are:

i. SQUIRE JAMES5 BUDD, b. Oct 14, 1862, White Plains, NY; m. (1) EMMA C. HASKINS, Abt. 1885; b. Oct 1866, WI; d. 1901, Portage Co, WI; m. (2) ANNIE ??, Aft. 1897; b. Abt. 1860.

Notes for SQUIRE JAMES BUDD:

Have not found a census record for Squire Budd. The 1900 census for his wife, Emma says she is a widow. Tradition says Squire had a habit of disappearing for awhile and then returning. His Neice, Josephine Budd Gisriel of Jacksonville, FL said he (and his family) went with his mother, Frances to NC and was living with her there in 1895.

Reports say he sometimes went by the name of Gerald Eugene Budd. The following may or may not be our Squire James.

1900 Boston, Suffolk Co, MA. Gerald Budd 38 b. Oct 1861 NY. Annie 37 b. Dec 1862 NY. Gerald is a gardner and Annie is a servant for Seth Perkins. They have been married 3 years and had no children.

1910 Newton, Middlesex Co, MA. Gerald E. Budd 45, Annie E. 50. Gerald b. NY, Annie b. Can - Scotch. Gerald is a house painter and rents his home. Annie is a laundress for private families. They listed this as a first marriage for both - had no children.

Notes for EMMA C. HASKINS:

1900 Steven Point, Portage Co, WI. Emma C. Budd 33 widow, Children: Bertha 14, Clarence 7, Lawrence 7, Raymond 2. Emma and Raymond b. WI. Bertha b. MI, twins b. FL. Emma has had 4 children, all living.

** Received obit from Edward Hasselkus

Mrs. Emma Budd died at her home at 1608 Clark street this morning at 5:15 o'clock, after an illness of over a year with consumption.

Miss Emma Haskins was born near Wautoma on Oct. 29, thirty-five years ago.  She grew to womanhood in that vicinity and married Squire Budd, who, the family says, deserted her and her four small children about three years ago and has never assisted in caring for her or them since.  She has maintained herself by washing and similar work until finally she was overcome by her disease and was compelled to get assistance from the city.  Her family consists of a grown daughter, Miss Bertha, who lives at home, a pair of twins, Clarence and Lawrence, who live with a farmer near Mosinee and Raymond, who lives with a farmer at Brushville, Waushara county.  Her stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Miller, formerly residents of this city, have been living at the Veteran's Home since last fall, but are here to attend the funeral.  She also leaves three sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Andrew Barton of Plainfield, Mrs. Warren Martin of Hancock, William Miller, a soldier in the Philippines, Ira of Star Lake, Philo of Adams county, Miss Minnie and Charles of this city.

The Funeral will be held Friday afternoon at the Advent church on Pine street, Rev. Mr. Swendson officiating.  Mrs. Budd has been a member of that church for two years, and is said by those who knew her to have been an exemplary woman devoted to her family and faithful to every trust. [Stevens Point Daily Journal  February 27, 1901]

Notes for GEORGE GRANT BUDD:

George Budd was born in White Plains, NY (Westchester County). [New information indicates Geroge may have been born in Niagara Co, NY]. A birth record has not been found but the information comes from his death certificate as well as a statement from his daughter, Mabel.
