Hugh N. Weir And Rhoda D. Matthews

1. HUGH N.2 WEIR (JOHN1) was born 1819 in Carroll Co, GA, and died Mar 7, 1848 in Vera Cruz, Mexico. He married RHODA D. MATTHEWS Jan 7, 1845 in Carroll Co., GA, daughter of ABEL MATTHEWS and NANCY COUCH. She was born Oct 1820 in Laurens Co, SC, and died Oct 21, 1905 in Marshall Co, AL.  He was probably the son of John Weir and Isabel Black

Notes for HUGH N. WEIR:

Information for Hugh's parents comes from the book "The Holcombes. Nation Builders" Copyright, U.S.A. 1947 by Lewin Dwinell McPherson and Elizabeth Weir McPherson.

Hugh's parentage and history need a lot more research. Tradition says he was born in 1819 and that Isaac was his twin. His military record says he was 25 when he enlisted so was born in 1822. Census records for 1830 and 1840 do not show twin boys.

Hugh N. Weir enlisted in the war with Mexico in 1847 in Company organized at Carrollton, Carroll Co. GA commanded by Capt. Benjamin McFarland Long of Carrollton. He fought in campaigns in Mexico. He died there in service to his country and is buried in Jalapa, Mexico.  Burial: Vera Cruz, Mexico

Isaac Weir, Hugh N.'s brother also fought in the Mexican War. Isaac died on the way home and was buried at sea. Their older brother Samuel Black Weir named a son after the brothers who died in the Mexican war (Isaac Hughey Weir).

Notes for RHODA D. MATTHEWS:

Rhoda D. (Matthews) Weir and her two sons are listed on the 1950 and 1960 census for Carroll co. Ga. living with her father Abel Matthews.

In 1900 Rhoda was living with her son George H. S. in Red Apple precinct of Marshall Co. Alabama. Her birth date is listed as October, 1820 and 79 years old. She is listed as a widow and had two children - both living.

Rhoda received a pension from the Mexican War.

*Included with pension papers* George H. S. Weir wrote a letter to the pension office April 24, 1906. The letter states, " Dear Sir I want to get what was due Rhoda D. Weir at her death. She died the 21 day of October 1905. To pay her funeral expenses. The number of her certificate was 3270 page 172 roll 203. The expenses was about thirty five dollars. Yours Truly G. H. S. Weir"

Notes for JOHN HENRY WEIR:
John is living with his parents in Marshall Co Alabama in the 1900 census of that county. He is 30 years old being born in October 1869. He is a widower. Also living with them are his children Neils D. (9), Mary (7), Cora (6), and Vernie (4).

Mama (Louise Weir) said that John married Eliza Jane Brownlee and she burned up at the wash pot.  We could not find an Eliza Jane Brownlee but we did find the following:
First Baptist Church Boaz, Marshall County, AL
Willie R. Weir May 3, 1875 Feb 9, 1899 Wife of J. H. Weir

It certainly looks like this Willie R.Weir was John H.'s first wife. She died at about the right time. And born at about the right time. They were married about 1889 as the first child was born in 1890.

Notes for WILLIAM HUGH WEIR:

William H. Weir was born Frbruary 25, 1872 in Carroll County, Georgia. By 1880 the family had moved to Clebourne County, Alabama where he is shown on the Census as 8 yrs. old. His family is living next door to his uncle John B. Weir.

He is listed on the 1900 Census of Marshall Co Alabama living with his parents. He is 27 years old, born in Feb. 1873 and a widower.

He is listed on the 1910 Census of Marshall Co Alabama as head of household. He has been married less than a year and it is his 3rd marriage. (This is probably a mistake as no one who knew him seemed to know of a third marriage). He did marry Dora Stonicher in Dec. 1897 and she died a few months later in May 1898. In 1910 he is living with his wife Ida B. and stepdaughter Lillian who was 3 years old.

In 1927 or 1928 William H. Weir moved his family to Flintville, Tennessee (Lincoln county) because schools were free. In Alabama every child paid tuition and with a growing family it could be a problem.

He died April 25, 1940 of skin cancer. He is buried at Flintville Cemetary, Flintville, Tennessee.

Ida Haynie was only about 15 yrs. old when she and her brother George left her father in Clay County Alabama and went to Marshall Co to live near her sister Mattie who had married and left Clay County. Ida and George rented a small farm. She soon married Cisero Garrard and George married his sister Zacky.

In the 1910 Census record of Alabama she is living with her husband, William H. Weir in Marshall Co, Alabama. She is 22 years old, been married less than a year and has had one child. Her daughter, Lillian is listed as 3 years old and the stepdaughter of William Weir.

The Haynie Family Bible states that:
1. Cisero Garrard and Ida Haynie were married March 15, 1906. Lillian Alberta Garrard was born Dec. 30, 1906.
2. Cisero Garrard was born July 27, 1876 and died Nov. 20, 1907.

The 1910 census for Red Apple Dist. Marshall Co, AL lists Martha A. age 34 (b. 1876) as wife to John L. Long age 41. They have been married 8 years - her first and his second. She has had 5 children, 3 living. The census record lists their three children as well a two from his previous marriage.
