Family Group Sheet

Joseph Ricketson And Serena Foy

1. JOSEPH5 RICKETSON (TIMOTHY4, TIMOTHY3, JONATHAN2, WILLIAM1) was born 1784 in Burke Co, GA, and died 1820 in Montgomery Co, GA. He married SERENA FOY Jul 17, 1806 in Tattnall Co, GA, daughter of GEORGE FOY and SARAH MOORE. She was born 1786 in NC, and died 1856 in Coffee County, GA.

Notes for JOSEPH RICKETSON:

Joseph's mother was almost certainly named Purdence and her surname may have been Fisher. No other information about his mother can be found.

He was the great great grandson of William Ricketson, the emigrant. William Ricketson's mother may have been Elizabeth, a widow. All the Ricketsons and Rickersons in America may have descended from this William. I have not been able to determine the origin of the Ricketson name.

Joseph was born in Burke Co, GA. His grandfather, Timothy Ricketson, Sr. left a will in Richmond Co, GA in which he left property to Timothy, Jr., Joseph's father. Some say Joseph may have been born in NC as the family seems to have been there before moving to GA.

Joseph's father, Timothy married a second time to Mary Wilkins and moved to Kentucky leaving Joseph and his other son Abraham in GA. Abraham seems to have settled through the middle part of GA while Joseph settled in the southern part known as the Wiregrass Area. Joseph's half siblings who lived in Kentucky changed their name to Rickerson.

Joseph's children stayed in Wiregrass, Georgia although his grandchildren spread out from Florida to Texas.

Joseph was a shoemaker and farmer. He was justice of the peace in Tatnall and Montgomery counties.

Have not found any reference to Joseph being in the R.W. but he was certainly old enough to have served in the war of 1812.  I found the following listing for the 1821 land lottery in Georgia.

1821 Land Lottery GA - Rabb - Snelling
Rickertson Joseph (Orps) Mont Colquhouns 204/1 Houston

Joseph died before the 1820 census was taken and after Oct 15, 1818 when he witnessed a deed.

Notes for SERENA FOY:

Serena was previously married to Needham Arnold by whom she had one son, James Arnold.

Serena's last three children were fathered by a neighbor, David Sears. Serena and David Sears were charged with adultery in the courts. The three children took the Ricketson name.
**Note: I have not seen any documentation. The information was posted on GenCircles and referenced the Home page of Johnny L. Ricketson on Genealogy.com.

Serena may have been Indian.

Manning served in the Civil War, was a prisoner in Indiana and the hospital in Richmond, VA. Although I don't think he died during the war I've not been able to find him after 1860 when he was in Ware Co, GA age 20 and married to Amanda age 17.

Notes for RACHEL RICKETSON:
There may be a problem with Rachel's birth date.  She is reported to have been born in 1813 and married in 1825.  That would make her only 12 when she married.  To complicate matters, she is already living with James Peterson in 1820 in Appling Co, GA.  He is 16/26 and she is 0/10.

Supposedly, she died in Coffee County, GA. NO Date. I can't find her after the 1860 census.

Notes for LUCY PETERSON:
Lucy was born March 1829 to James and Rachel (Ricketson) Peterson in Telfair county Georgia. By 1840 the family had moved to Lowdnes County, Georgia. In 1850 the family was in Clinch county and in Echols county in 1860. The family probably did not move; Rather, the county lines changed. Lucy married Samuel E. Prescott in 1850 - some say in Montgomery County. But they were living in Clinch County.

By 1870 Lucy and Samuel Prescott had moved to Manatee County, Florida. By 1900 the County had changed to De Sota. They raised their family there and in 1900 Lucy was still living next door to son, Hiram.

Notes for SAMUEL EVERETT PRESCOTT:
Samuel E. Prescott was born in 1824 in Appling County, Georgia where he is enumerated on the 1830 Census in the household of Jesse Prescott. Between 1837 and 1839 the family moved to Hamilton County, Florida where the household is listed on the 1840 Census record.

By 1850 the family had moved to Alachua County, Florida, but Samuel moved to Clinch County, Georgia where he married Lucy Peterson, daughter of James and Rachel Peterson. Samuel and family are listed on the 1860 census for Echols County, Georgia. He probably did not move. The Counties probably changed boundries. He served as Echols County's first tax collector from 1856 until 1861.

In 1866 Samuel moved his family to the Joshua Creek settlement in Manatee County, Florida. He lived there about 3 years and then moved a little north to the Crewesville community (Now Sebring). In 1870 and 1880 Samuel is listed on the census record for Manatee County, Florida.

At only 13 years of age in 1837 Samuel Prescott served in Capt. Samuel Swilley's Company, 2nd Florida Militia. In 1839-1840 he served as corporal in Capt. David R. Bryan's Company, Georgia Militia, during the Indian Wars.

On March 10, 1861 Samuel enlisted as a private in Company C, 7th Florida Infantry Regiment C. S. A. He was in the battles of Chicamaugua and Missionary Ridge, and the battle of Atlanta. His regiment was with General Robert E. Lee's army at the surrender at Appomattox in 1865.
