1. J ESSE SQUIRE8 BUDD (JAMES7, GILBERT6, JOHN5, JOHN4, JOSEPH3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born Aug 31, 1823 in Duchess Co, NY, and died Apr 5, 1897 in Murphy, Cherokee Co, NC. He married (1) ELMIRA C WILLIAMS Oct 4, 1848 in Murray, Orleans County, NY. She was born Sep 1827 in Henrietta, Monroe, NY, and died Jan 24, 1854 in Murray, Orleans Co, NY. He married (2) AMANDA ALBERT 1856 in Grover, IN, daughter of PETER ALBERT and SARAH SPITZER. She was born 1831 in NY, and died Aug 1859 in Grover, IN. He married (3) FRANCES JAMIMA BARNEY Mar 4, 1861 in Lake Co, IN, daughter of JAMES BARNEY and ELIZABETH CRIPPEN. She was born Apr 4, 1834 in Glenville, Wayne Co, NY, and died Jan 31, 1897 in Murphy, Cherokee Co, NC.Notes for J ESSE SQUIRE BUDD:The parents of Jesse Budd were James Budd and Eunice Squires. They were in Schondack, Rensselaer Co, NY in 1820 and by 1830 had moved to Fishkill, Duchess Co, NY. Since Jesse was born in 1823 his birth place is uncertain. In 1840 and 1850 he was in Orleans Co, NY. In 1860 he was in Lake Co, Indiana. In 1870 and 1880 he was in Grant Co, WI. He had a son born in 1859 in MI. Family tradition says he moved to Kansas from WI and then back to WI. Sometime before 1890 he moved with his last wife and 3 youngest children to Florida. His son, George was married in 1890 in Florida. Tradition says he either died in Florida or moved to Murphy, Cherokee Co, NC with his wife, Frances and son, Squire James. I have found no trace of him after the 1880 census record in Grant Co, WI. Jesse married Elmira Williams in 1848 in Orleans county, NY. She died in childbirth in 1854. Her son Jacob is living with Jesse's sister Abby Reed in 1855, listed as Judson. Elmira is the mother of Jesse's first three children. Jesse married Amanda Albert in 1856. Amanda died in 1859, again in childbirth. Her son Aaron is living with his grandparents, Peter and Sarah Albert in 1865 in Orleans Co, NY. Census records say Aaron was born in Michigan and some say Amanda was buried in Indiana. It's certain that Jesse was a traveling man and is hard to trace. The death certificate for George Budd, son of Jesse, says his mother was
Frances Barney. We have received new information from Edward Hasselkus, husband of a great
granddaughter to Mary Jane Barney Dixon (sister to Frances Barney). Edward found
the June 15, 1865 state census for Hartland, Niagara Co, NY which lists J. S.
Budd 42, Frances J. 32 and children: Emily 15, Frank 14, Reed J. 11, Aaron 6,
and Squire J. 2 8/12. Also Daniel H. Barney 26. Squire J. is listed as being
born in Niagara Co, NY. 1850 Murray, Orleans Co, NY. Jesse Budd 26, Elmira 22, Emily 10/12. Jesse is a farmer living next door to parents. 1860 Eagle Creek, Lake Co, IN Jesse Budd 36, Amanda M. 30, Children: Emily E. 10, Frank 9, Reed J. 6, Aaron 1. Aaron b. MI. All others b. NY. She is listed as keeping house in 1870 but it's not clear if she was married to Jesse. Jesse is married to Frances J. in 1865 and 1880. Notes for F RANCES JAMIMA BARNEY:
****Note - July 24, 2005 - see new information in notes for Jesse S. Budd above. In 1840 and 1850 the family of Frances Barney is in Schenectady Co, NY. In 1860 they have moved to Eagle Creek, Lake Co, IN. According to the 1880 Census Record Frances Barney was born in 1833 in New York. Her parents were both born in NY also. She married Jesse S. Budd (His 3rd marriage). They are listed on the 1880 census record for Grant county Wisconsin, Fennimore. George was married in 1890 in DeSoto County, Florida so it is believed that the family moved to Florida during the 80's. One story is that Jesse died there and Frances went with her son Squire James to Murphy, North Carolina (Cherokee Co) and she died there in 1897. We have not found a reference to them in NC. A. Gideon Baxter. The many friends of Mr. A. Gideon Baxter of East Troy, were sorrowed to learn of his death at West Palm Beach, Florida, on Thursday, March 26. Mr. Baxter had been in failing health since the year 1896, during which time he had retired from active business. He sought relief, and went to a hospital in Philadelphia for treatment, in the spring of 1897. Early in January in 1900, he went south and remained seven weeks, returned in March, afterwards suffering the effects of a severe cold. He returned for hospital treatment during the summer and fall of 1901, where he remained a number of weeks, also passed some time there in the fall of last year. During this time his condition was a very serious one, and it was not expected that he would be able to leave his room again. Under the careful medical aid of his friend and physician, Dr. T. A. Gamble of East Troy, he was able to be out to walk or ride. With this encouraging improvement late in the fall of 1902, Mr. Baxter with his wife, went to Florida for further benefit. After having been away from home about three weeks, the water or climate did not seem to agree with him, and he was taken sick at St. Augustine. At West Palm Beach he seemed to gain, and from there went farther south, when it did not seem to benefit him, returning to West Palm Beach on February 10th. He was taken to his bed on February 22nd, and failed so rapidly that word was sent on March 2nd to his son George at East Troy to come there, who arrived at his father’s bedside on the evening of March 23rd. Mr. Baxter died on the evening of March 26th, and was conscious until a short time preceding his death, passing away in a peaceful death slumber. The bereaved wife and son left West Palm Beach with the remains on Friday morning following, where the body was escorted to the train by members of the West Palm Beach I.O.O.F., of which order Mr. Baxter was a member. The arrival in Troy was made on Sunday morning, and the further journey was made to his late home at East Troy. Funeral services were held at the home on Tuesday, March 31st, at 1 o’clock p.m., conducted by Rev. Loller of East Troy, who preached from the text, 1st Cor., 15-54. He was assisted in prayer service by Rev. M. Kymer, a former pastor. The remains were laid to rest in Glenwood cemetery by pall bears of his own choice, B. F. Shattuck, Jno. Ruggles, J. A. Ball, Geo. Cole and M. E. Greenough of East Troy, the I.O.O.F., of East Troy attending in body. Mr. Baxter was born on Pisgah, October 6, 1845, at the old homestead now owned by his brother, Ezra of Troy, and was raised in Troy township. On April 17, 1867, he was united in marriage to Emily A. Budd of Newark, N. Y. To them were born seven children, Mrs. H. S. Fudge of Pisgah, Geo. W. and Seth R. and E. Irene of East Troy, Otis G. of Osceola, Frank of Ithaca, and Edward B. of Newark, Va., who with his wife, and one brother, Ezra of Troy survive, mourning the loss of husband and brother. At the age of sixteen years he was converted and joined the Methodist church, and was ever an active and energetic worker in religious affairs, fearless in the discharge of duty, and an uncompromising enemy of evil, his influence being felt not only in his own neighborhood but at other religious gatherings and distant communities. In 1887 he built the Baxter store at East Troy, which was arranged also to furnish a place of meeting for the I.O.O.F. of that place. He had joined the Lodge at Springfield, and when the Order was started at East Troy, he became a charter member, remaining as such for a period of thirty years. In 1888 he moved to East Troy, and occupied his store for ten years to the time of his illness in 1898. Mr. Baxter most ably filled the position as Sunday School superintendent at East Troy for a number of years. He was a member of the famous "praying band" of ten members which was organized in Troy township on August 31, 1874. Stated meetings of this body were held on every month, and at one of the first meetings he was elected secretary, and was the last member of the body to keep up the work. Beside his business duties at East Troy, Mr. Baxter was an extensive stock buyer, traveling through large districts of New York and Pennsylvania with large droves of cattle. Our friend, the deceased, was a man of sterling character, his was an influence that benefitted at all times where his friendship was known. He was a person of much intelligence, and untiring energy, the possessor of a strong constitution and will, yielding not to discouragement, and very ambitious in the affairs with which he dealt. Of a genial and kindly nature and disposition, the loss of such a citizen is a serious blow to his community and country. Children of E MILY BUDD and ABRAM BAXTER are:DA M.10 BAXTER, b. (1920 and 1930 Census record has Emma Budd as a patient in the County Insane Asylum in Oshkosh, Winnebago County, WI.) But we found (and then lost) an obit for Emma. She died in 1901. Received Obit from Edward Hasselkus: Miss Emma Haskins was born near Wautoma on Oct. 29, thirty-five years ago. She grew to womanhood in that vicinity and married Squire Budd, who, the family says, deserted her and her four small children about three years ago and has never assisted in caring for her or them since. She has maintained herself by washing and similar work until finally she was overcome by her disease and was compelled to get assistance from the city. Her family consists of a grown daughter, Miss Bertha, who lives at home, a pair of twins, Clarence and Lawrence, who live with a farmer near Mosinee and Raymond, who lives with a farmer at Brushville, Waushara county. Her stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Miller, formerly residents of this city, have been living at the Veteran's Home since last fall, but are here to attend the funeral. She also leaves three sisters and four brothers, Mrs. Andrew Barton of Plainfield, Mrs. Warren Martin of Hancock, William Miller, a soldier in the Philippines, Ira of Star Lake, Philo of Adams county, Miss Minnie and Charles of this city. The Funeral will be held Friday afternoon at the Advent church on Pine street, Rev. Mr. Swendson officiating. Mrs. Budd has been a member of that church for two years, and is said by those who knew her to have been an exemplary woman devoted to her family and faithful to every trust.
