1. JAMES THOMAS8 BOATWRIGHT (JOHN7, WILLIAM6, WILLIAM5, THOMAS4, JOHN3, JOHN2, JOHN1) was born Jul 2, 1828 in Washington Co., GA, and died May 16, 1863 in Baker's Creek, MS. He married RACHEL JOINER Jan 10, 1850 in Washington Co., GA, daughter of MALACHI JOINER and RACHEL GARDNER. She was born Jan 8, 1825 in Washington Co, GA.  He was the son of John Boatwright and Jane Oliver.

Note: The following information comes from John Rutledge.

James enlisted as a private in Company C, 57th Regiment Georgia Infantry May 8, 1862. He died on May 16, 1863 from wounds received at the Battle of Baker's Creek, Mississippi on May 16, 1863. He served for the Confederate States of America. He was enlisted in Savannah, Ga. by Col. H. Cleveland for a period of three years or the duration of the war. He was paid his $50.00 bounty on July 15, 1862.

Source: Confederate Archives, Chapter 10, File No 4, Page 27: Shows place of birth as Washington, Georgia. Also the following: The 57the Regiment Georgia Infantry was originally known as the 2nd Regiment, Georgia State Troops (Col. Barkuloo). It was mustered into the service of the Confederate States in May, 1862, as Colonel Barkuloo's Regiment and subsequently became the 54th Regiment Georgia Infantry. Early in 1863 this designation was changed to 57the Regiment Georgia Infantry.

Notes for RACHEL JOINER:

Rachel Joiner was born in 1825 in Washington county, Georgia. She lived with her parents until 1850 when she married James Boatwright. They were planters and she took over the farm when James left to fight in the Civil War. She received assistance for wives of service men from the town of Dublin in 1861 and 1862.

Have not found death date or burial for Rachel.  Did not find he on the 1880 census.  I believe she died between 1870 - 1880.

She married THOMAS IVY SMITH Jul 25, 1880 in Emanuel Co, GA, son of JOSEPH SMITH and REBECCA JOINER. He was born Apr 20, 1860 in Washington Co., GA, and died Nov 30, 1930 in Emanuel Co., GA.

Notes for CENIANN PERMELIA BOATWRIGHT:

Ceniann bought one acre of land for $5.00 from Jane Barwick Jul 23, 1903.
C.P. and T.I. Smith bought 60 acres (more or less) from U.m. and E.L. Durden for $1000.00 Oct. 26, 1905. This land is adjoining land owned by C.P.Smith and Jane Barwick.
Devoe Smith was administrator for Ceniann Smith's estate. Inventory includes half interest in 60 acres (more or less). This land is adjoining land owned by Thomas I. and Ceniann Smith. (This is probably 1/2 interest in 60 acres owned jointly by Ceniann and Jane Barwick.)

Ceniann died in 1917 and is buried at Kea's Church Cemetary.

Notes for DEVOE SMITH:

Devoe Smith was born in Emanuel county Georgia, Adrian Sept 15, 1896 to Thomas Ivey and Cennian (Boatwright) Smith. He lived there until joining the USMC in 1917.

In 1919 he received an honorable discharge as corpral, with a PURPLE HEART, wonded in combat in Germany. Served as aid to New York city area USMC Commandant for a year before combat, and was stationed in Haiti after war until discharged.
